I've been playing with the ipad and dagi stylus. This is the first trial with the stylus and sketchbook pro. The dagi works well, it takes a little getting used to, i.e holding it at certain angles, plus it's not pressure sensitive. This drawing is from the cover of the book I am currently reading, Anna Karenina.

It’s coming up to June and I enjoyed my winter renewal so much last year, I was almost (but not quite) looking forward to winter this year.

The goal is to embrace winter - and all the activities that make this season good - whale watching, hot chocolate, bonfires, slow meals with people who make us smile, reading, watching tv series, walking along the headland and sea breezes.

The idea is to add up days of doing things that replenish the soul and body, rather than counting down the days of winter. The daily practice is to do something creative and focus on fitness/movement.

So, I’m going to start with 30 days. And see how I go…

I think I've got my winter camera (Canon SX10) and a summer camera (Canon D10). After two weeks of testing, I can certainly recommend the Canon D10. It handles the underwater shots really well - I love the colors and brightness. On land, I do miss the zoom of the SX10, so this D10 is strictly for situations where I can't take my other camera.
I love the D10. It's a lot of fun and keeps me in the water for longer - swimming and diving to get some shots - so it's also a great exercise tool ;)
I would absolutely recommend it. I do love the 560mm zoom of the SX10. But this D10 absolutely does the job of taking underwater shots really well. The fact that it's shockproof means that I can just throw it in my swim/snorkel bag and not worry about it. I wrap the floating wrist strap around the lens, and that keeps the lens protected. Out of the water, the photo quality is sharp and colors perfectly acceptable.

We went to Coogee for the fireworks. Sat with friends and watched the fireworks under a full moon. Little bit of cloud cover which accentuated the fireworks, and a gentle sea breeze on a summers night. Happy new year everybody!!

We had a beautiful Christmas eve dinner at Kyle's place. Buckwheat pasta with smoked trout, salad and a wasabi cream sauce. Yum! Merry Christmas everyone!

Poor little wattlebird running itself ragged trying to feed a common koel, twice its size! Koels are brood parasites - they lay one egg in another bird's nest, and when the koel hatches, it kicks the other hatchlings out. It's a tough world.

I read that it's possible to transfer your slides to digital using the macro feature. Got to adjust the settings a bit more - light source, background and angle - but I quite like the result.

Back in late September, I snapped a photo of the lorikeets mating (http://www.flickr.com/photos/papayatreelimited/3948872343/).

Yesterday, the proud parents turned up at our window with their baby. We didn't catch on at first that it was their young. It had a dirty beak and sat away from the food, gnawing at a shriveled up apple peel. We thought it was the solitary bird that visits us, all alone and mournful. Then this morning the juvenile turned up again and this time we heard its high pitched call. Very cute indeed.

A flock of black cockatoos landed on the tree just outside our window for their yearly pruning of the banksia tree. They eat the weevils in the banksia fruit, and make a lot of noise while they are at it. I decided to paint them in flight.

I was taking photos of a serene scene of a raven sitting in the sun, when this little bird - a willy wagtail - started attacking it. It's spring here now and the wagtail was trying to chase the raven away from its nest. The raven was completely unperturbed by the attacks, but then he flew off soon after. Brave little wagtail!

We bumped into Le, at the Kingsford, with his buddy, Alan - so we ordered up BIG. Le was hungry! 2 plates of salt and pepper calamari, spare ribs, shandong chicken, stir fried mixed vegetables with tofu, fried rice and fish - and we finished almost everything except for a couple of pieces of chicken and spare ribs. And the price? $66 all up.

Yesterday, we had a red dust storm in Sydney. It came all the way from the heart of Australia, places like the Simpson desert, Broken Hill and Uluru. It covered everything; the Harbour Bridge, The Opera House and Bondi Beach. The dust was carried over by gale force winds - the rainbow lorikeets were dusty and windswept. All this dust (75,000 tonnes per hour!!) is headed towards New Zealand - hi cuzzy bro! Some of the dust might find their way to the glaciers - making them dusty - creating in effect a heat barrier - causing them to melt faster. And air pollution levels - 1500 times the normal level - the highest on record.

Kyle's dad's (Greg Powderly) spring roll recipe.
When I was a kid, we used to spend way too long making spring rolls. All the aunties, grandmother, grandaunties and cousins would be roped in to chop and slice. This recipe by Kyle's dad took (only) two hours. I wonder whether it only ever took that long in Malaysia, and that time seemed to stand still when forced inside, chopping a mountain of vegetables, or whether it really did take all day...
Here's the recipe...

spring roll recipe

You will need:
A packet of spring roll wrappers - either wheat, or rice paper wrappers
Filling:
all ingredients have to be sliced finely and long
chicken thighs - marinaded in a bit of garlic, soy, sesame oil, oyster sauce, pepper. pan fry until browned.
carrot
garlic shoots
spring onions
bamboo shoots
water chestnuts
fungus - wood ear
chinese dried mushrooms - soaked in hot water, sliced
snake beans
3 eggs - omelette - seasoned with a dash of soy, pepper, make a thin omelette and slice finely
beansprouts
Stir fry all the ingredients - and add sesame oil, oyster sauce, cornflour (and water), pepper, soy sauce.
Let the mixture cool.
Then roll into spring rolls.
deep fry until golden brown.
Dipping sauce:
thick soy sauce, soy, chopped garlic, oyster sauce - or any other dipping sauce you like.
Clear your schedule, eat and have a nap.

I've been busy learning how to cook in my new tagine. It's been a variation of very simple chicken dishes so far. This one is chicken with garlic and rosemary. A simple one pot meal. This is a stove top method.

Recipe:

Marinade a whole chicken in soy and pepper.
Heat oil in the tagine, brown the chook
Add:
a whole head of garlic, cut in half,
some potatoes cut into wedges or chunks, (optional - sweet potatoes, pumpkin),
lots of rosemary,
Bring to the boil, then simmer for 2 hours.
When it's ready, add some green vegetables - beans, brocoli, zuchinni etc,
cover, steam for a few minutes, and serve.

pan fried salmon with tumeric
sprinkle salt on the salmon, then coat with tumeric
heat olive oil in a pan, (butter optional), pan fry.
gently remove skin while in the pan, and fry the skin on both sides.
optional - add some chopped garlic in the pan, sprinkle on top of the salmon when serving.
I added some greens into the pan while the salmon was cooking.

When serving, I pour the remaining olive oil over the salmon, and sometimes add a dribble of soy sauce.

A new favourite, roast chicken with tomato rice from the (creatively named) Kingsford Chinese restaurant in Kingsford, near the University of New South Wales. The Schezuan chilli chicken with flat rice noodles were good too (but didn't photograph so well).

And spotted at the wonderful fruit and vegetable shop in Maroubra, red Italian lettuce.

Our friend Peter brought a python over for tea one day. It's a 4 year old stimpson's python from Central Australia. This grows up to only 1 meter and eats a mouse a week.

the lorikeets have been coming for about three months now. they've recently discovered the windows on the other side of the building, and have started visiting in the afternoon. when we don't see them, they peck at the window. here's one sitting among our pots of lemongrass, chilli and rosemary.
